Mini-Split Installation in NC and SC -- What You Need to Know Before You Buy

📅 May 2025 🕐 5 min read 📍 NC & SC

Mini-splits are one of the fastest-growing HVAC solutions in NC and SC -- and for good reason. They are efficient, flexible, and can cool or heat spaces that traditional ducted systems cannot reach. But they are not the right solution for every situation.

Here is everything you need to know before installing a mini-split in North Carolina or South Carolina.

What Is a Mini-Split System?

A ductless mini-split consists of two components: an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handlers mounted on the wall, ceiling, or floor. They are connected by refrigerant lines that run through a small hole in the wall -- no ductwork required.

They can heat and cool, making them a year-round solution ideal for NC and SC mild winters.

Best Uses for Mini-Splits in NC and SC

  • Home additions -- the most common use. Extending ductwork to a new room is expensive and often not practical
  • Garages and workshops -- converted spaces that need independent climate control
  • Sunrooms -- rooms that get extreme heat gain in NC summers
  • Home offices -- where you spend significant time and want precise temperature control
  • Older homes without ductwork -- avoid the cost and disruption of installing new ducts
  • Rental units -- easy to install in apartments and small rental properties
  • Server rooms or storage areas -- spaces that need cooling independent of the main system

Single-Zone vs Multi-Zone Mini-Splits

Type Description Cost Range (NC/SC)
Single-Zone One outdoor unit, one indoor handler $2,500 -- $4,500
Multi-Zone (2 rooms) One outdoor unit, two indoor handlers $4,000 -- $7,000
Multi-Zone (3-4 rooms) One outdoor unit, multiple handlers $6,000 -- $11,000

Top Mini-Split Brands for NC and SC

Mitsubishi is our top recommendation for most residential applications. Their units are exceptionally reliable, quiet, and efficient -- and they have a strong track record in NC and SC heat and humidity. They cost more but have significantly fewer issues over time.

Daikin is a strong alternative at a slightly lower price point. Good efficiency, solid reliability.

LG and Samsung offer competitive pricing and have improved quality in recent years -- good for budget-conscious installs where long-term reliability is less critical.

What the Installation Process Looks Like

  1. Site assessment -- we determine the right unit size for the space (BTU calculation)
  2. Choose indoor unit location -- wall mount is most common, but ceiling cassettes and floor units are available
  3. Run refrigerant lines through a small hole in the wall (typically 2.5-3 inches)
  4. Mount and wire outdoor compressor unit
  5. Charge the system and run a full test

A single-zone mini-split install typically takes 4-6 hours. Multi-zone installs take a full day or more depending on the number of zones.

NC and SC note: Permits are required for mini-split installations in most counties in NC and SC. Any reputable contractor will pull the permit -- if a contractor offers to skip the permit to save money, walk away.

Mini-Split vs Central AC -- Which Is Right for You?

For cooling a whole home, central AC is almost always more cost-effective per square foot. For individual rooms, additions, or spaces without ductwork -- mini-splits win. Many NC and SC homeowners have both: central AC for the main home and one or two mini-splits for specific areas.

Energy Efficiency and Tax Credits

Qualifying mini-split heat pumps are eligible for the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit -- up to 30% of the cost, capped at $2,000 per year. Mitsubishi and Daikin ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models typically qualify. Ask us to confirm eligibility when you request a quote.
